BBC Outnumbered's Karen to make major change in Christmas special

Outnumbered fans are on the edge of their seats, as the much-beloved Brockman family makes a return to screens after nearly ten years with a festive special. The Christmas episode will showcase Pete and Sue Brockman managing life in a smaller home as their kids have flown the coop.

On Wednesday's Morning Live show, BBC audiences were treated to an exclusive first look at the holiday special, which sees one of the characters facing a significant choice.

The preview features an adult Karen (Ramona Marquez) contemplating a name change due to its stereotypical connotations. She tells her parents: "Karen is the archetypal name for an entitled middle-aged woman."

Her father, Pete (Hugh Dennis) responds with wry humour, commenting: "I'm sorry, we'd meant to teleport into the future to check on that when we christened you."

Taking her daughter's proposal seriously, Sue (Claire Skinner) enquires about the new name Karen is considering. Before Karen can answer, Pete jokingly suggests: "Morticia is nice."

Elsewhere in the teaser, viewers see Pete, Karen, and their son Ben (Daniel Roche) getting into the Christmas spirit as they deck out their tree. But it's not all tinsel and baubles as usual as the family's choice of decoration raises some eyebrows, reports Express.

Pete is visibly puzzled by the unconventional replacement for the traditional star, prompting Karen and Ben's query. He replies: "I don't know, it just doesn't seem right."

The peculiar decoration is then revealed, no less than a miniature version of football star Harry Kane crowning the tree. When the sneak peek came to an end, presenters Helen Skelton and Rav Wilding could hardly keep their joy under wraps, excitedly anticipating the full episode.

Rav quipped: "A great top for a Christmas tree!" to which Helen responded: "We saw The Brockmans together on The One Show, I think the whole nation went, 'Is that what they look like now, those kids?'".

Concurring, Rav remarked that the trio had indeed grown up, with Helen adding: "It happens in a blink of an eye!" Outnumbered first hit the screens in 2007 and continued its run over five series until 2014.

Despite a Christmas special in 2016, BBC audiences have been clamouring for another comeback. This Christmas, fans will watch Sue and Pete Brockman trying to round up their children and grandchildren for a traditional family Christmas at home.

However, things take unexpected turns with fate, neighbours, hyenas, and bus replacement services throwing spanners in the works.

In anticipation of the festive episode, Hugh Dennis said: "I can't wait for the Brockmans to be back together again. Pete and Sue have downsized, the children are no longer children, but I'm sure family life will prove to be just as chaotic as ever."

Claire Skinner expressed her excitement too: "I'm really looking forward to being reunited with my TV family. Working on this wonderful BBC comedy doesn't feel like work and is one of the greatest joys for us all."

The Outnumbered Christmas special will air on BBC One and iPlayer on Thursday 26th December at 9:40pm.
